Computer repair in Wigmore

This one is easy, because I am based in Stopsley, two minutes away. If you are in Wigmore you are a few streets away, and that shows up mainly in how fast I can get to you.

£45 an hour, quoted first, and obviously no call-out charge this close. Same day is normal rather than a promise I have to work at.

What Wigmore actually calls about

A lot of people here work from home at least part of the week, and the jobs reflect that: the machine and the connection both have to hold up on a Tuesday morning, not just in the evening.

Working from home on a setup that was never planned

A laptop on the kitchen table, a monitor that only works sometimes, and a headset that drops on every call. Sorting this properly is a couple of hours and it pays for itself the first week: a docking setup that works with one cable, a screen at the right height, and audio that does not embarrass you on a Teams call.

The video call freezes every time

Usually not your broadband. It is normally WiFi at the far end of the house, or a machine quietly throttling because it is full of dust and running hot. Both are cheap to fix and both are diagnosable in about twenty minutes.

WiFi that dies upstairs

The router is wherever the phone socket was put in 1994, which is almost never where the house actually needs it. Sometimes the answer is moving it, sometimes it is one wired access point. It is rarely a mesh kit bought on a guess. See WiFi and networking.

The school laptop has locked up again

School accounts, filtering software and a machine shared between two children is its own particular headache. Usually sortable, and worth doing before the coursework deadline rather than during it.

Nothing is backed up

Photos on a phone that is nearly full, documents on one laptop, and nothing anywhere else. Setting up something automatic and off-site takes under an hour and it is the one job on this page that people are always glad they did. See backup.

It has just got slower and slower

Rarely one big fault. Usually a mechanical drive, a startup list that has been growing for five years, and a Windows install that has never been cleaned out. An SSD and an afternoon normally does more than a new computer would.

Getting to you

How it works if you are in Wigmore

I am based in Stopsley, two minutes away, so there is no call-out charge and no travel time to talk about. For most Wigmore and Bushmead jobs I can be there the same day if I am not already out on another one.

Being local changes what is worth doing. Small jobs that would not justify a call-out anywhere else are perfectly sensible here, so it is worth asking about the annoying thing you have been living with rather than only ringing when something dies.

Diagnosis first, always, and no charge for it. You find out what is wrong and what it costs before you commit to anything.

Remote support works for plenty of it, which is quicker still. If it can be fixed without either of us moving, it will be.

Questions

What Wigmore asks first

You are actually based in Wigmore?

Near enough. I am in Stopsley, two minutes up the road, which is why Wigmore, Bushmead and Stopsley get the fastest response of anywhere I cover.

Can you come today?

Usually yes, if I am not already out on a job. Ring rather than email if it is urgent.

Is a small job worth calling you out for?

In Wigmore, yes. There is no call-out charge and I am minutes away, so the ten-minute printer problem you have been putting up with for a year is a perfectly reasonable reason to ring.

Can you set up a proper home office?

Yes, and it is one of the more satisfying jobs. Docking so it is one cable in the morning, screens at a sensible height, sound that works on calls, and the WiFi or a cable sorted so the connection holds up during the working day.
