What we see

What people actually ring about

Almost never anything exotic. Nearly always one of these.

It has got slower every year

Usually a failing drive or a machine full of things starting themselves, not old age. Often the cheapest job on this page and the one that makes the biggest difference. See PC and laptop repair.

It will not turn on at all

Diagnosis first, before any parts are ordered. You are told what is wrong, what the options cost, and whether it is worth doing.

The WiFi drops in the back bedroom

Rarely fixed by buying another router. Usually placement, channels or one badly configured extender making things worse. See WiFi and networking.

My photos are on a dead computer

Often recoverable if the drive still spins. You get the honest odds first, and you will not be charged more than the files are worth. See backup and data recovery.

Somebody rang saying they were Microsoft

If they had remote access, closing the window is not enough. Accounts, passwords and banking need checking properly. Ring sooner rather than later.

I have bought a new one and cannot face setting it up

Files moved across, email working, printer found, and the old machine wiped properly before it leaves the house.

Worth knowing

If you are still on Windows 10

Standard support for Windows 10 ended in October 2025. That does not mean your computer has stopped working, and it does not mean you have to replace it tomorrow, but it does mean it is no longer getting security patches unless you have taken a step to keep them.

Microsoft has extended consumer Extended Security Updates, and you can now enrol at any point until the programme finishes on 12 October 2027. That is a year more breathing room than most people think they have, and it is worth knowing before rushing into anything.

Before accepting that a machine cannot run Windows 11, it is worth actually checking. On a great many PCs the only requirement that fails is TPM, and it is simply switched off in the BIOS by default. Turning it on and re-running the check often makes the official free upgrade available, with full security features and no workaround involved.

Where a machine genuinely will not qualify, there are choices, and they get explained properly: enrol for updates, upgrade in an unsupported configuration and understand what you are giving up, or replace it. What comes first in every case is a backup, because far more people lose photos during an upgrade than to a virus.

If you would rather somebody just looked at it and told you which of those applies to your machine, that is a phone call and it costs nothing. There is also a full guide to the Windows 10 change if you would rather read it through first.

How it works

What happens when you ring

You describe what it is doing

In your own words. There is no script and no ticket number, and quite often it can be sorted there and then on the phone at no charge.

We work out the actual cause

Remotely if that suits, or at the house. You are told what is wrong and what each option costs before anything is bought or started.

It gets fixed, and you understand it

You are shown what changed and what to watch for. £45 an hour for the time it actually took, and nothing for the travel.

See the prices page for the full list, including websites and Google listings.

Questions

The things people ask first

Do you come to the house?

Yes, that is most of what I do for home clients. Luton and Dunstable carry no call-out charge, so you pay £45 an hour for the work and nothing for the travel. Evenings and Saturdays are normal working time rather than a premium.

Is my Windows 10 computer still safe to use?

It is not receiving security patches unless you have enrolled in Extended Security Updates, which Microsoft has now extended to 12 October 2027. Before assuming your machine cannot run Windows 11, it is worth checking: on a lot of PCs the only failed requirement is TPM, and it is simply switched off in the BIOS. Turn it on and the official free upgrade often becomes available.

My laptop will not turn on. Is it worth fixing?

Often, and it is usually cheaper than people fear. Diagnosis comes first and you get a straight answer, including when the answer is that an eight-year-old machine is not worth £180 of parts. That advice is free and it earns nothing, which is rather the point.

Can you get my photos back?

Frequently, yes. If the drive still spins there is a good chance. You will be told honestly what the odds are before anything is spent, and you will not be charged £400 chasing files worth less than that. See backup and data recovery.

Will you explain it without the jargon?

Yes. If you leave not understanding what was wrong, the job was only half done. That includes writing things down where it helps, and it includes not making anybody feel stupid for asking.

Can you help my mum or dad with their computer?

Very often what is needed, and it is done patiently. Setting up a machine so an older relative can actually use it, getting them off something unsupported, or just showing them the same thing a third time without sighing.

Do you deal with scam calls and pop-ups?

Yes, and it is a common call. If somebody has had remote access to your machine, that needs dealing with properly rather than just closing the window: accounts, passwords, banking and what was actually taken. Ring sooner rather than later on this one.
